Geological Formations of Ground water

• Aquiclude: It is a solid impermeable layer underlying or overlying an aquifer. It may contain large amount of water but it willnot allow movement of water through it. Eg: Clay
• Aquifer: It is an underground layer of water bearing permeable rock. It not only holds the water but yields in sufficient quantity. Eg: Gravel
• Aquitard: It is a bed of low permeability along an aquifer. It is partly permeable. Eg: Clay lenses interbedded with sand.
• Aquifuge: It is an impermeable bed of rock which contains no openings therefore neither absorbs nor transmits water. Eg: Compact rock
