PWD

Public Works Department is one of the very prominent departments of the Government of Kerala and is the statutory authority for designing, planning, monitoring, constructing and undertaking maintenance of public works of the State Government such as Government Buildings, Roads, Bridges etc, irrespective of the source of funds for the same. The Department is headed by the Minister for Public Works and the Secretary to Government at the Secretariat.

IRRIGATION

In Kerala, Irrigation department was initially a part of Public Works Department. Based on the recommendation of The Retrenchment Committee, the staff of Public Works Department underwent reduction and led to the formation of Irrigation Division, with three sub-divisions and nine sections on 6th Meenam 1109 (19/3/1934) to carry out the irrigation works of the State. Later on as per the G.O (P) No 27/90/PW & T dated 29th march 1990 the Public Works Department was bifurcated into two departments viz, Irrigation Department and Public Works Department with effect from 1st April 1990.

HARBOUR ENGINEERING

The Harbour Engineering Department (HED) is a line Department of Government of Kerala, which does investigation, planning, execution and monitoring various projects in coastal area. Mainly, this department does the construction and maintenance of fishing harbours and fish landing centres, fishery infrastructures like hatcheries, ponds, farms, etc., shore-based tourism projects, infrastructures of Ports and coastal roads.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Directorate of Technical Education deals with all the technical education activities in the state . Currently there are 12 Engineering Colleges (9 Govt. Colleges and 3 Govt. aided Colleges), 51 Polytechnic Colleges (45 Govt. Polytechnics and 6 Govt. aided Polytechnics), 3 Fine Arts Colleges, 39 Technical High Schools, 17 Commercial Institutes and 42 Tailoring and Garment Making Centres functioning all over the state, under the control of the Directorate. In addition to this there are around 150 self financing Engineering Colleges both in the Govt. and private sector functioning in the state.
